Fall cleanup: get the leaves off before the snow

A wet layer of maple leaves sitting on the lawn all winter is the main reason Guelph lawns come out of the snow with grey, matted patches in April. That's snow mould. It grows under anything that holds moisture against the grass.

The fix is simple: get the leaves off before the snow does. Most fall cleanups happen from late October into November. If you have a lot of trees, two visits works better than one big one, since the second catches everything that drops after the first.

Spring cleanup: set up the whole season

In April we rake out the snow mould and dead grass, clear the plough damage along the driveway, pick up everything the winter left behind and clean out the beds. Then the first cut happens on a clean lawn instead of on top of sticks and leaves.

If you're planning fertilizer or mulch this spring, booking them with the cleanup saves a trip and makes sure things happen in the right order.
