The fall feed matters most

If you only fertilize once a year, make it the fall. In September and October the grass is building roots and storing food for the winter, not pushing out leaves. Feeding it then means it comes out of the snow thicker and greens up weeks earlier in April.

Spring: a lighter feed in May

The spring feed goes down in May, once the lawn is actively growing. We don't push a heavy nitrogen feed in early spring. That just makes you mow more in May and leaves the lawn weaker going into the summer heat.

Fertilizer and weeds

Ontario's cosmetic pesticide ban keeps the old broadleaf weed killers off residential lawns. What's left that actually works is density: a well-fed lawn, cut at 3 inches and overseeded where it's thin, leaves no room for dandelions and crabgrass to get started. Fertilizer is the biggest part of that.
