Why mulch
A couple of inches of mulch holds moisture in the soil through a dry Guelph summer, keeps the soil temperature steady, and blocks most weed seeds from sprouting. It also makes the whole front of the house look finished.
The edge is what makes it look sharp
A clean spade edge between the grass and the bed is what makes a yard look looked-after. It also stops the lawn from creeping into the beds. We cut the edge before the mulch goes down.
Not too deep
More isn't better. Mulch piled past about 3 inches suffocates roots, and mulch piled against tree trunks holds moisture against the bark and causes rot. If years of top-ups have built up a thick layer, we rake some back or take it out before adding fresh.
Common questions
When is the best time to mulch in Guelph?
Late spring, once the soil has warmed up, usually right after the spring cleanup. A fall top-up is fine too.
How often should mulch be replaced?
Most beds need a top-up every year or two. Full replacement is only needed if it has built up too thick.
What colour mulch should I get?
Black, brown and natural cedar are the usual choices. We can bring samples or match what you have.
