Rake out the grey, matted snow mould along the driveway and wherever the plough piled up, and clear the beds. The first cut is usually the last week of April or the first week of May, once the grass hits about 4 inches. Sharpen the blade first or the tips shred and go white. More on this ›
Cut weekly. Never take more than a third of the blade at once, and every-other-week cuts break that rule in May. Keep it around 3 inches. The spring feed goes down in May.
Watering: Guelph's bylaw (updated June 2026) goes by your address, odd addresses on odd dates and even on even, up to four hours, between midnight and 9 a.m. or 5 p.m. and midnight. Early morning is best. More on this ›
The lawn slows down and can go a bit dormant in a dry stretch. That's normal. Don't scalp it: keep it at 3 inches or a touch higher, and water deeply once on your day instead of a little every night. Every second week is often enough in mid-summer. More on this ›
Aerate, then overseed. The ground is still warm, the nights are cool and crabgrass is dying off, so new seed has its easiest start of the year. Keep it damp until it's up and give it the first cut at 3 to 4 inches. The City has given out permits for extra watering on new seed in past years, so check before you start. More on this ›
The fall fertilizer is the most useful feed of the year. Keep the leaves off: a wet mat of maple leaves is where next spring's snow mould comes from. The last cut drops to about 2.5 inches so the grass doesn't mat under the snow, usually late October to mid-November. More on this ›
